Beetle Spin early Spring for Largemouth Bass in Boat Wells Lake St. Clair 2023

The Beetle Spin is still one of my most prized possessions in my tackle box, I've decided to modify this spinnwerbait though, drop the boring tiny colorado blade and super size it with a monstrous #6 gold willow hildebrandt blade along with some .042 wire for added strength, then a ball bearing swivel for freer movement. Combination is quite deadly early spring for largemouth bass... Bigger thump, more flash, freer faster spinning blade and now I use a Betts Spin body that's longer and thicker for more juiciness! And ya know, I've tried other colors, but gold seems to work best and black dot on the back, along with the two black stripes running down the front just seems to be the preferred color by largemouth.

Since smallmouth bass are so temperamental in April after a rain storm and then they turn off, remember the nickname of the month aka April showers, don't waste your time with these bastards lol, largemouth bass are less temperamental and less stubborn, basically an untapped resource at Lake St. Clair because everyone always goes for bronzebacks, barely anyone fishes for species. So after a rain storm, try fishing the shallows, in the marina, down the canals, near pilings, reeds, all types of structure and you'll have fun, guaranteed!

The two lures I would say are most effective early spring for Lake St. Clair largemouth, are probably the spinnerbait and jerkbait... You see The Michigan Fisherman had a blast with the perch colored KVD jerkbait dubbed sugar daddy over at black creek this year early spring... I still think though, you can move the spinnerbait a lot more slower, near the bottom better in the marina where it's deeper or near the top just below the waterline better because it's pretty shallow in the marsh area of black creek, so you can get your beetle spin right near those reeds at Black Creek... I had recently tried out at the Xrap at Black Creek, but was picking up a lot of muck, so maybe the Xrap subwalk would a be a better choice if you're more in-tune to using a jerkbait, so you can get right next to those reeds where bass are hanging out at. And like I always say, I love modifying my lures, if you want even more enticement, especially in murky water after it's rained, add one one of those VMC Hybrid Treble #4 for more added flash.

I mean every spring I head down the marina, fish the boat wells and land at least one 4 or 5 pound largemouth bass... You can probably do this at any inland lake too such as Lake Orion or Kent Lake. And really, despite the notion that largemouth bass favor warmer water and smallmouth bass favor colder water, they definitely do, but despite all that, for some strange reason every year largemouth bass are the first bass species to become aggressive and start biting early spring, it's like clockwork. Had one dude tell me, he was surprised that largemouth bass school up so much in January after I put my underwater drone in the boat wells one year... Maybe there's something too that!

Damn smallmouth, prissy little stuck up bastards! lol For some strange reason largemouth just become active faster in colder water temps even though they prefer the warmer water and stay in the shallows all year round, figure that one out? lol
